Macca’s new potato scallop has sparked heated discussion on what the deep fried snack should be called, with a major supermarket continuing the debate.
McDonald’s debuted “potato scallops with chicken salt” at Australian restaurants from January 11, but fans are already arguing over the name of the fast food giant’s newest product.
Diners in Victoria are insisting the item is a “potato cake”, while those in SA are adamant it’s a “potato fritter”.
However those in NSW and Queensland agree the deep fried potato slice, coated in crunchy tempura batter, is a potato scallop.
Now, Coles supermarket has taken to its Instagram page to ask its followers: “What do you call these?”
But while the post boldly claims it will “clear this up once and for all”, thousands of comments within 24 hours since it was posted – spouting a range of opinions – would suggest otherwise.
“Doesn’t really matter as long as there’s potato in it,” one easily pleased commented wrote.
Another said: “It’s a potato patty.”
“POTATO SCALLOP – say it louder for the people in the back,” another wrote on the highly engaged post.
One deeply invested social media user said: “Just say ‘one of them fried potato things’ – most people will understand.
“But if we’re getting technical, they are a scallop, referring to the direction of cut on the potato.
