Quentin Tarantino‘s slavery-based revenge flick, Django Unchained, was released to theaters in 2012, but it might have an afterlife on the small screen.
“I have about 90 minutes’ worth of material with Django,” Tarantino said, according to USA Today. “It hasn’t been seen. My idea, frankly, is to cut together a four-hour version of Django Unchained.”
The theatrical version of the exploitation comedy, which starred Jamie Foxx in the title role, ran 2 hours and 45 minutes. Tarantino, who also wrote the screenplay and won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, knew that having the movie run any longer would have turned off viewers. “People roll their eyes at a four-hour movie,” the legendary director said. “But a four-hour miniseries, that they like. Then they are dying to watch all four parts.”
Tarantino envisions dividing Django into hour-long chapters and airing it on cable TV. “It wouldn’t be an endurance test. It would be a miniseries. And people love those,” he said.
Django also starred Christoph Waltz, who’s part led to an Oscar win for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Leonardo DiCaprio was also spectacular in the film as the villain and Tarantino cast Kerry Washington in the lead female role right before she became an enormous star for starring in TV’s Scandal.
Fans will have to wait and see whether Django: The Miniseries comes to fruition (yes please!). In the meantime, Tarantino is busy working on a new draft of another Western, The Hateful Eight, which is reportedly set to start filming in November.
